Luxury Log Homes

Maybe the title should read, “Why NOT Luxury Log Homes?” But I admit to bias.

So, this is how I view log homes.  Firstly, homes made from logs have a uniqueness of construction that sets them apart from the crowd. Your log home is not a duplicate of thousands of other similar homes. As an owner of a log home you are part of a select band of distinguished home owners. If you choose one of your builder’s standard designs you can easily and relatively inexpensively stamp your own personality on it by making small but effective changes. By selecting the type of timber to be used for construction, the profile of the logs and the method for constructing the corners, what was a standard design is transformed into your design.

Of course, if resources allow, you can design and build something that truly reflects your aspirations and character. You can work with a builder and design the home yourself or work with a specialist architect and design something really special. And remember, log homes don’t need to be large to be magnificent.  Some of the most attractive log homes I have seen were relatively small, but looked simply stunning.

Then there is the solidity of construction. Well constructed homes built from solid logs have a presence to them, they have substance. You know they aren’t going to be blown away by a gust of wind! So many modern homes that are dry lined and full of stud walls seem, well …flimsy, if you lean on them you can feel the walls flex.

One of the other attractions of log homes is their green credentials. Sure, for some people reducing green house gasses and cutting down the size of one’s carbon footprint is of primary importance, others couldn’t care less. Well, wherever you stand on the subject of global warming, we know that building homes from a renewal and sustainable crop makes a mountain of sense. Make sure you choose a home that is made from timber from properly managed forests – that way there will still be trees available for harvesting for your great grand children.

Not only is timber ‘green’, but it also has great thermal insulation properties. Through a combination of good design and solid logs, you can produce a home that is unique, solid, has impeccable green credentials and has good thermal efficiency. Log homes have stood up to the tough, harsh Canadian and Scandinavian winters, where the sun hardly breaks free for weeks at a time. Well designed and built log homes will keep you warm in the winter and insulate you from the heat in the summer.

Unless you have an aversion to timber, there is little not like when it comes to luxury log homes.
